Feed Your Zoo At Home With Del Monte Peach Crisp #CBIAS #iLovemyK9

Sometimes, I feel like my house is a zoo! Who knew a house with 2 adults, 1 child and a golden retriever could be total chaos?

I saw the trailer for Fox’s Blu-Ray/DVD “We Bought A Zoo” and knew immediately it was a film my family would enjoy (and could relate to)! Also, the fact Matt Damon is in the movie is another incentive! So, I decided to incorporate a zoo theme with our family movie night.

We visit our local zoo often and always comment on how amazing the fruit and vegetable platters look inside the animals’ area! So, thinking on that healthy basis, I visited Walmart for items to make our zoo night fun, healthy and enjoyable for our entire family (including our beloved dog)!

Del Monte products (fresh fruit, fruit cups AND pet snacks/food) immediately came to mind! Also, Walmart has a special offer! Buy two participating Del Monte pet products and the “We Bought a Zoo” Blu-Ray or DVD and receive $4.00 off (in-store only). I am excited to see that two of my dog’s favorites are included in that promotion: Milk Bones and Milo’s Kitchen treats!

Upon arriving at our usual Walmart, we grabbed a sale flyer then decided to check out the fresh and refrigerated fruits. I quickly noticed Del Monte refrigerated grapefruit which is one of my absolute favorite snacks! After grabbing some ideas, we headed towards the shelf stable section to choose our fruit cups. After my son selected Del Monte peaches (my goal is to make a healthy version of peach crisp with granola), we made our way to the dvd section to grab a copy of “We Bought A Zoo”.

I immediately saw a huge display for “War Horse” then noticed “We Bought A Zoo” in the newly released dvd section. The dvd was visible from the main aisle and easy to find. We looked around the movie section (which was quite organized with signage, customers won’t be lost looking for specific titles) then my son wanted to find party supplies with monkeys and zoo animals for our “animal party”.

We searched the party section, but found nothing animal or zoo related (just basically character themed items). But, my kid tried to convince me that an Angry Bird piñata was perfect for our zoo night, somehow I didn’t see the connection.

With our fruit cups and dvd, our final stop was the pet section. I have to be honest, the dog food aisle was the only aisle organized. I immediately spotted Milo’s Kitchen treats hanging near an end cap, but when I made my way around the corner there were dog treats scattered everywhere. I saw one economy box of Milk Bones that was shoved on a shelf, so I knew they had to be somewhere in the area. My son asked to see the goldfish, so we visited the aquariums. Would you believe the rest of the dog treats were across from the goldfish (so the aisle consisted of dog treats, gold fish / aquarium items, then more dog treats)?

Sadly, I did not see any special signage advertising $4 off with the purchase of 2 pet products and Del Monte. I visited customer service and they had no idea what I was talking about, so I just decided to miss out on the $4 savings (that was very difficult, but I was already there with a very excited 3 year old).

We arrived home and started prepping for our animal party! We decided on the following healthy menu:
  • Grilled pork skewers
  • Fresh fruit skewers
  • Vegetable platter with dip
  • Baked chips
  • Animal crackers
  • Gummy worms (this was my kid’s idea, he kept saying “some animals eat worms mommy”)
  • Peach crisp made with Del Monte diced peaches and granola
Here are a few photos of our Feed Your Zoo At Home party spread before we dove in:
Of course my sweet golden girl was beyond excited when she realized she had Milo’s Kitchen Beef Jerky and Milk Bones!
My dog was over the photos, all she wanted was her new treats!  Here she is sitting pretty, patiently waiting for her Milo’s Kitchen Beef Jerky.

After cleaning up , it was time to prepare our peach crisp. I heated the peaches in a saucepan, drained the liquid off then placed in a glass dish. Next, I sprinkled granola on top. Sounds simple, but extremely favorable and delicious (crunchy from the granola and sweet from the warm peaches). I wanted to keep the snack healthy, so opted not to add butter. Also, a side of all natural vanilla ice cream would have been a nice compliment!

How was the “We Bought A Zoo”? My son didn’t get into it, he was expecting a cartoon (again, he is 3). But, my husband and I enjoyed it! I would recommend it to others, it has a good story-line and is heart-felt. We had a blast with our family friendly movie night and my son asked when we can have an animal party again. Oh, one more thing…have tissues when you watch the movie!
