TAMPA’S OLDEST THEATRE WELCOMES ITS YOUNGEST MOVIEGOERS FOR FAMILY FAVORITES FILMS

Tampa Theatre’s Kid-Inspired Movie Series Is Back NEW Evening Screening,
Classic Family-Targeted Films and Kids’ Ticket Prices

Tampa Theatre has been a favorite destination for Bay-area moviegoers for generations. Starting next month, the next generation of young fans will get the chance to see some of their parents’ most beloved childhood films on the big screen, thanks to the sixth annual Family Favorites classic movie series, presented by Bank of America.

The Theatre also hopes that offering a discounted kids’ ticket price for this series – $8 for ages 12 and younger – will appeal to families looking for an affordable weekend outing in downtown Tampa. Adult tickets are $10.

“This is the only classic movie series for which we offer a child’s price,” says Jill Witecki, the Theatre’s Director of Marketing. “While many of our summer and holiday classic offerings are family-friendly, this is the series that we program specifically with families in mind. I want parents to be able to introduce their kids to some of their own favorite movies from childhood and to see them again on the big screen.”

A League of Their Own (1992)

3:00pm Sunday, March 31

When it arrived in 1992, A League of Their Own was both perfectly suited for its historical moment and brilliantly unique. Popular sports movies were stories of boys and men, made for boys and men, with very few exceptions. Consciousness of that kind of exclusion was beginning to bubble up to the cultural surface in the early ’90s. But whenever it showed up, A League of Their Own would have been a hit. Based on the true story of a mid-WW2 all-women’s baseball league (and directed with a deft and sensitive hand by the late, great Penny Marshall), it’s charm and star power is undeniable. Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rose O’Donnell and Tom Hanks will make you laugh and cry, no matter what year it is or whether you’ve ever swung a bat in your life. 2h 8m / PG / Comedy

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

SPECIAL EVENING SCREENING!  6:30pm Sunday, April 7

Hayao Miyazaki, acclaimed filmmaker and animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is one of those creative types with two definite messages: there is more going on in the natural world than modern lives allow for; and just because something is strange or unknown doesn’t mean it should be scary. My Neighbor Totoro is the story of two young sisters who move with their father to an odd house in the country after their mother is hospitalized. There, they meet with spirits of the forest and conduct their own Campbellian hero’s-journey-in-miniature. The lives of all kids are filled with drama and adventure every day, a fact which might slip beneath the notice of adults as they move through their grown-up world. Their emotions are just as intense; their problems just as serious. But don’t worry, children, adventurers, spirits of the wilderness: Miyazaki sees you. 1h 26m / G / Animated Fantasy

The LEGO Movie (2014)

3:00pm Sunday, April 14

Something happened to movies just after the turn of the 21st century. To be considered successful, every movie has to be a blockbuster and spawn a dozen sequels; that means that the dramatic stakes of every movie have to be turned up to eleven. No longer can a hero foil a bank heist or just help somebody; now, the fate of the whole universe has to be at stake. Enter The LEGO Movie, an unassuming animated gem that’s willing to play around with and remix (or even satire) that idea: what if there’s been a mistake? What if the main character isn’t really the Hero Of Prophecy, fated to defeat the Great Evil and rescue everything? What if the stakes are smaller, like helping your friends or learning to value your loved ones? Also what if we put some great cameos and songs in it, and animated it in a really eye-catching way? Sounds pretty good, right? Good news: it’s awesome. 1h 40m / PG / Animated Comedy

Dolphin Tale (2011)

3:00pm Sunday, April 21

How many Floridians haven’t heard this story already? Get ready to have those heart-strings tugged. Inspired by the real life of Winter, celebrity dolphin and de facto mascot of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Dolphin Tale tells the story of Sawyer, a boy who happens to help rescue a dolphin tangled in the line of a crab trap and badly injured. Though most of Winter’s tail has to be amputated, she is given an innovative prosthetic tail that allows her to survive and thrive, and Sawyer’s commitment to help her changes his life forever for the better. Filmed mostly in Pinellas County, Dolphin Tale is a homespun and uplifting story of how you can help yourself by making room in your life to help someone else, too, even if “someone else” is a large-brained mammal of a slightly different type. 1h 53m / PG / Family Drama

Sing-Along Frozen (2013)

TWO SHOWS!  3:00pm Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28

If Tampa Theatre learned one thing in the calendar year of 2018, it’s that our audiences really, really like singing along to movies. And listen, we are committed to making that happen for you as frequently as we possibly can. But besides that: it’s Frozen. Disney animated features are always a big deal, but Frozen was legitimately a cultural phenomenon. It’s the highest grossing animated film of all time, the best-selling Blu-Ray of all time, and you are already singing “Let It Go” in your head right now, aren’t you? Luckily it deserves that acclaim. The story of the reconciliation and re-connection of Princess Elsa and her sister Ana is a different kind of love story that the usual princess movie — and it’s one that everyone can connect with. So run through those vocal exercises, dress as your favorite princess, reindeer or snowman, leave your self-doubt at home and come belt one out with a thousand of your closest friends at Sing-Along Frozen.  1h 42min / PG / Animated Musical
