Gliding Stars #30DaysOfCaring Day 9

For Day 9 of #30DaysOfCaring, I am sharing Gliding Stars of Central Florida. Gliding Stars is a Not-For-Profit organization providing adaptive ice skating programs and related products nationwide for people with challenges. This organization serves children as young as 18 months and adults who are challenged by every day disabilities, prejudice, physical barriers to spaces, and a diminished sense of self worth and value.

Mission: The Gliding Stars organization provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to increase their personal potential through development of ice skating skills in a regular program of instruction and practice in their own local community, culminating in the demonstration of those skills publicly in an end-of-season on-ice choreographed performance, which itself serves as a source of motivation, teamwork, increased self-esteem and the ‘magic’ that results from transcending one’s barriers in order to accomplish one’s dreams.

I can do it! I can skate!

“Stars” get to make friends and develop socially. They also improve balance, coordination, endurance, strength and self-esteem. Some Stars have even taken their first independent steps as a direct result of their efforts in this program. Structured training for instructors and volunteers give on-ice helpers the effective tools needed to bring their skating Stars across barriers that might seem impossible at first, teaching them to literally dance on the ice!

Gliding Stars of Central Florida currently skates at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den on Sunday afternoons from October through March. You can find your local chapter here.
